Desire to Secure ScholarshipsWhether you are helping pay for college or your child has to borrow to pay for college, the motivation to get college paid for with debt-free money is critical to be competitive. Why? Because unfortunately, it isnt a cakewalk. If it was, everyone would have a free ride.In order to make it through the scholarship process, students need 1. direction on what to do and 2. motivation to implement the process. Working with your student to calculate future loan payments (and lack of disposable income after paying them) is a great way to make them despise borrowing money. If you are covering the bill, you could try to think of other ways to incentivize them. Weve seen some parents give them a cut of wha t is saved (upon graduation of course). Some students dont even need extra motivation!Not sure when your child should be applying for scholarships? We break it down for you in this article:Related post:WHEN YOUR CHILD SHOULD START APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS2. Work EthicSimilar to motivation, a work ethic will be required as well. However, if your child knows the steps to take, they can actually get away with as little as 2 hours per week during the school year! (Thats only 1 movie worth of time per week!) If they are more a crammer, 20 hours per semester is our rule of thumb.3. Ability to Follow InstructionsBelieve it or not, simply being able to follow directions will increase your childs competitiveness for scholarships. Students commonly overlook requirements and automatically disqualify themselves. Simply double-checking that theyve met all the criteria and followed the instructions correctly before submitting will make an impact. One great tip here is to have someone else, such as you or a teacher, double check the submission before sending it in.4. (Reasonable Amount of) InvolvementsWhile we mentioned that involvements arent all your child needs, they still play a part in competitiveness. The goal, however, is NOT to get involved in everything but instead pick a few activities that your child wants to focus on. Have you ever heard the saying Jack of all trades. Master of none.? This applies here. Dont push your child to be in every single activity. Have them pick a few, dive deep, and show their commitment. Committees will appreciate that much more than trying to be in everything.5. Good Grades OR a Legitimate JustificationScholarship committees do NOT expect every student to have a 4.0. They understand that things happen. But what they DO appreciate is an explanation (if given the opportunity). If your child has a lower GPA, have them take advantage of the Anything else section to explain their circumstances. This does not mean to whine and blame it on s omeone else but to take ownership and explain that they are working towards bettering their GPA. If your child got sick and fell behind in school or something of thatways for college students to make moneynature, they typically understand.Video game addictions do not count.6. List of Awards and AchievementsMany scholarships will ask for any awards or achievements (though not all). This section is very easy if your child has been keeping track of it all along. If they dont, its easy to forget about the time they made Honor Roll or received an Academic Letter. Create a document on the computer (backed by cloud storage, of course!) and start recording any awards or recognition they receive. I promise their future scholarship-winning self will be glad.7. Well-Organized EssaysMany students FEAR this requirement for scholarships and unfortunately, most legitimate scholarships require some sort of writing.Still, your child doesnt have to be the next Shakespeare to be competitive for schol arships. All they need is a well-organized essay. What does that mean? It means listen to the 3rd grade teacher and follow the Opening, 3 points, Closing method! If judges can follow their points and tie it back to the essay prompt, they will be in great shape for securing scholarship money for college.Worried about essays? Passions/HobbiesIf a student simply just hangs out, committees will have a hard time believing theyll do anything different in college and beyond. Scholarship committees want to invest in students that have a drive and passion. Though your child may not know what they want to do beyond college, simply having passions and hobbies right now is a good indicator that they will be dedicated to a career path. This can be anything water sports, biking, reading, scrapbooking, playing Pokemon Go just kidding.. that last one doesnt count.. but you ge t the point. Child doesnt have any? Now is the time to find one! Fortunately, its never too late.9.Qualified Proofreader and Recommendation Letter SourceBuilding relationships in both high school and college is important for so many reasons but when it comes to scholarships, these relationships are key because they can proofread applications as well as write amazing recommendation letters. Having a go-to person that is willing to help your child will make applying 10x easier. Also, if they truly know your child, they will have an easier time selling them to the committee. Recommendation letters can be a huge factor in whether or not your child gets the goods. One key point here it should be your child reaching out for help (not you as a parent!)10. Career path chosen? Maybe.Last but not least, your child should have a career path in mind and plan to attend (or currently attend) a 2-4 year program. You might be thinking: But what if they dont know what they want to be yet? Thats ok! Still, for scholarships, its best to at least choose something they are leaning towards for now versus saying that they dont know. Scholarship judges understand students are young and will probably even change careers multiple times, let alone majors. Just before Halloween 1938, Orson Welles the American filmmaker, who was to produce and act in the film Citizen Kane (1940), broadcast a radio version of War of the Worlds, the science fiction masterpiece written by H. G. Wells in 1898. This radio drama involved Orson Welles’s Mercury Theater players, and it purported to report an actual invasion of Martian spacecraft landing at Grovers Mills, New Jersey, a small town near Princeton. The broadcast proved to be extremely realistic, convincing and alarming for it fooled thousands of listeners into believing that the Earth was actually being attacked by warships from outer space. Combined research shows men and women vary little in experiencing emotion but contrast greatly in the expression of emotion. Psychologists have studied the reasons behind the differences through the years and there are still many unanswered questions but there are several well-accepted possible causes and combination of causes. Neuro science and the brain makeup is the first area of proven differences. Medical researchers have been aware for a long time that the male and female brain is different in size. In 2001, researchers from Harvard found certain parts of the brain were differently sized in males and females; this may answer some of the questions about the difference in the male and female brain in regards to development and†¦show more content†¦Women use both the left and the right sides of their brains for emotions. This seems to be yet another reason it is much easier for women to express their emotions (princess-ami). Another area of the brain, which is different in men and women, is the Hypothalamus within the brain. The Hypothalamus is separated into two parts. The larger and most distinct portion of the hypothalamus is the preoptic area. This area is directly related to mating and sexual desires. The male preoptic area is 2.2 times larger and has twice as much cell density then females. The difference in the preoptic only becomes apparent after the age of four (Cahill, 2005). Researchers and testing has proven over time, that some cognitive abilities between males and females change throughout infancy and adolescents. Girls generally perform and use their verbal skills much earlier than boys. Women do much better on exams such as SAT’s in the verbal areas where men excel in the mathematical arena. This finding in itself may seem to solidify the fact of biological makeup. If that is the case, then why do girls perform equally as proficient in the area of math until they reach their â€Å"tween† and teenage years, which is generally between 6th and 7th grade? In any case, Gencarella (2005) argues that, although the four main characters do show an extent of self-interest, their moral behavior does not reflect the teachings of the show. Issues of race, gender and politics are still addressed but are presented in a different way than they were ten to forty years ago. * The ingredients of a successful sit-com consistently involve strong, sometimes iconic characters, which often represent stereotypes. Recent sitcoms have challenged and broadened the idea of traditional stereotypes. For example, Gencarella (2005,394) argues that the four main characters of Seinfeld represent four distinct political stereotypes: the individualist, the hierarchical, the egalitarian, and the fatalist. The way these political stereotypes interact with each other and their community have no doubt contributed to the comicality and thus the success of the show. * Unlike the 2005 sit-com The Office (American version), Seinfeld does not consistently display essentialist traits in its characters. It conveys essentialist themes through satirical situations involving essentialism. This is none more evident than the following example (â€Å"The Yada Yada†), which Gencarella (2005,398) also uses to describe the egalitarian nature of Kramer: * Jerry: Those people can be so touchy. * Kramer:â€Å"Those people. † Listen to yourself. * Jerry: What? * Kramer: You think that dentists are so different from me and you? * They come to this country just like everybody else in search of a dream! * Jerry: Kramer, he’s just a dentist. * Kramer:Yeah, and you’re an anti-dentite! * Jerry: I am not an anti-dentite! * Kramer:You’re a rabid anti-dentite! Oh, it starts with a few jokes and some slurs – â€Å"Hey denty! † Next thing you know you’re saying they should have their own schools! * Jerry: They do have their own schools! Jerry Seinfeld is clearly representing an essentialist point of view towards dentists. The absurdity of the situation, however, entails that this essentialist view is not being endorsed; rather it is being exposed in a ludicrous fashion. It shows the absurdity of prejudice and racism. This draws comparisons, as Detweiler (2012,730) explains, to Randy Newman’s defense of his controversial song Short People. The song criticises short people in an essentialist manner, describing them as having small voices and little beady eyes. Randy Newman explains, â€Å"that by choosing an object of prejudice so absurd, he might expose the absurdity of all prejudice†¦Ã¢â‚¬  * In the case of The Office (American version), Michael Scott is blatantly and shockingly racist, sexist and prejudice. The perception that the audience recognizes this view as essentialist, which is the basis of its humor, reinforces the idea that the text does not endorse this kind of behavior. As Detweiler (2012,730) describes, this is further broadcast by the occasional ironic facial expressions, to camera, of Michaels Scott’s colleague, Jim Halpert. Through the clever use of irony it sets an example of how not to act. * Due to the satirical and ironic nature of the sit-com, the question of whether the inclusion of stereotypes and essentialist views warrant a critique as a conclusively essentialist text depends solely on the audience’s interpretation of the text. The writer’s intention here is irrelevant.
